LEFTY GROVE #1 PICK 1 January 1928 The draft for the 1928 season was held, with Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove being the first player chosen. The left-handed pitcher was selected by the Harlem Knights, who received the first round pick in a random drawing. Grove, 28, is coming off of a 20 win season with the Athletics in '27. The second player chosen was Babe Ruth, 33, by St. Louis. The legendary slugger is coming off of a 60-home run season, and although old, he still has a few good years ahead. With the third pick overall, Hershey selected first baseman Lou Gehrig. Gehrig, 24, had his breakout season in 1927. Pawtucket chose veteran second baseman Rogers Hornsby with the fourth pick, and Mississippi selected stout outfielder Hack Wilson. 24-year-old rookie Carl Hubbell was the first round pick for North Dallas, and 4th season catcher Mickey Cochrane was the man Montgomery desired. The last pick in the first round was for the Sahara Jihad, who curiously selected right-handed pitcher Larry Benton. Benton, 30, is coming off of a season where he lead the NL in winning percentage, is good for one season, but disappears thereafter.
