AVERILL FIRST OVERALL IN '29 DRAFT As was no surprise, outfielder Earl Averill was the first pick in the 1929 draft. Averill, 26, was the most highly sought after prospect in what most scouts are calling a down year. Hershey, with the worst record in the league, had the first pick. Left-handed pitcher Larry French was the second player selected, by the Harlem Knights. Catcher Rick Ferrell was the third pick, taken by North Dallas, followed by St. Louis' selection of Bill Hallahan, a right handed pitcher from Binghamton, New York. Pitcher Ed Wells was taken by Pawtucket, followed by first baseman Dale Alexander, who went to Montgomery. Johnny Morrison, pitcher, was selected by the Sahara Jihad, and the defending champions Mississippi, under new ownership, selected catcher Hank Gowdy.
