MONTGOMERY BURNS 1929 PREIVEW The Burns couldn't piece together a run at the title, although a trade in the waning months could have made the difference. This year, however, the Burns are poised for the title. DRAFT Dale Alexander must have been surprised to be picked by Montgomery. He has Bill Terry and Lew Fonseca ahead of him. Somebody must be traded. Lyn Lary and Phil Collins were good picks, as was speedster Evar Swanson. Grade: B+ CATCHING Can't go wrong with Mickey Cochrane behind the plate. He is truly the leader of the team, and is a run producer as well. Plus, he is capably backed up by Pinky Hargrave and Zack Taylor. Grade: A- INFIELD The Burns have four great infielders. Unfortunately, three are first baseman (Bill Terry, Lew Fonseca and Dale Alexander). Pie Traynor makes up the other great one over at the hot corner. Up the middle are Woody English at short and Fresco Thompson at second. The Burns also have decent back-ups (Lyn Lary and Bill Regan) Grade: B OUTFIELD Is this a great outfield? Yes it is. Heinie Manush, Lloyd Waner and Paul Waner are the starters. The back-ups are equally impressive with Bibb Falk, Taylor Douthit and rookie Evar Swanson. If only some of these guys could play shortstop. Grade: A STARTING PITCHING The starting rotation takes a hit as Art Nehf and Jesse Haines are ineffective. When Pat Malone is most likely the ace, you've got trouble. Ken Holloway and Jesse Petty should help out. Grade: C+ BULLPEN The bullpen is notably strong. Fred Heimach is coming off a career year, and Firpo Marberry and Lil Stoner expect to be strong set-up men. Beyond these three, though... Grade: B- OUTLOOK As is the key with Montgomery and Mississippi, the team with the least crummy pitching will win. In this case, it will most likely be the Burns. PROGNOSIS: First Place
