NORTH DALLAS 40 1929 PREIVEW This team of odd names finished in last place last season, despite some surprisingly good seasons from people like Hughie Critz and Spud Davis. The team built for the future, we are told. DRAFT For a team with no first baseman, the passing on Dale Alexander was an unforgiveable sin, especially when they took Rick Ferrell, who is a good catcher, but they already have Spud Davis. They may have legitimized their draft with Heinie Meine and Roy Parmalee, but every ground ball that rolls to first base will be a reminder. Grade: C- CATCHING Spud Davis had a good season last year (.310 if 245 ab) but does not have the strength yet for a full season. Rick Ferrell is too young, and Charlie Berry just isn't good (.199 last year). With Gus Mancuso out for the season, this is a trouble spot. Grade: C- INFIELD As previously noted, they do not have a first baseman. Bud Clancy is the closest they have, and that isn't good. Hughie Critz had a good season last year, but can he do it again? The other side of the infield, though, is good. Travis Jackson is an excellent player, and Wally Gilbert will hopefully earn that 5th round draft pick status he has. Grade: C- OUTFIELD The outfield isn't bad. After all, they have Kiki Cuyler who had 16 hr and 29 sb last year. Mel Ott knocked in 89 runs and hit .291, and he's only 20. With Fats Fothergill and Cliff Heathcote probably platooning in the other slot, the outfield is decent. After these four, though, you have nobody's and ne'er-do-well's. Grade: B- STARTING PITCHING Carl Hubbell, Wes Ferrell and Bob Smith are not a bad place to start. Charlie Root is another excellent pitcher. This rotation could be what keeps North Dallas afloat. Grade: B+ BULLPEN Hope for a lot of complete games, because this bullpen is not all that strong. Ben Cantwell had 11 saves last season, but was hit pretty hard. He will be the ace, and the rest, well, need some rest. Grade: C- OUTLOOK Another rebuilding year, planning for the future. This season could be painful to watch. But if things begin to fall together early, could good things come to the North Side of Dallas? PROGNOSIS: Fourth Place
