PAWTUCKET FLYING DUTCHMEN 1929 PREIVEW Pawtucket is a scrappy team that gave Sahara a run for it when no one expected it. This year, they have a deeper team built on hitting. Giving the weaknesses of almost every pitching staff in the league, Pawtucket hope to hit there way into the World Series. DRAFT LHP Ed Wells and Johnny Frederick were excellent picks, addressing immediate needs as well as long term goals. Bobo Newsom will be a project, but has potential. As does catcher Earl Grace. Grade: A- CATCHING Val Picinich is coming off of a decent season, but surgery in the off-season has made him a question mark for full-time duty. With Glenn Myatt and rookie Earl Grace picking up the slack, the Dutchmen might have some problems. Grade: C- INFIELD The infield is what holds this team together. Pinky Whitney and Rogers Hornsby are arguably the best in the league at there position, and Del Bissonette is coming off an excellent season. With Bill Cissill poised to be the man at short, this infield has the capability of hitting .300 collectively. The team also has able backups Max Bishop, Charlie Grimm and Andy High coming off the bench. Grade: A- OUTFIELD Pawtucket’s outfield got a boost from the drafting of Johnny Frederick, who is expected to make an immediate impact. Along with Harry Heilmann and Hal Rice, the Dutchmen have a solid three and a good backup with Curt Walker. Grade: B+ STARTING PITCHING Sam Gray (12-10, 107 K) and George Uhle (18-9, 28th round pick) were pleasant surprises, and should be effective this year. Despite George Pipgras 7-20 record, the team still has high hopes. Eddie Wells will be a big plus. Grade: B+ BULLPEN Last year Ray Kolp was the man, going 8-1 with 6 saves. Bill Shores and Lloyd Brown should add some middle-man prowess. Grade: C+ OUTLOOK A solid season ahead. They should finish ahead of defending league champ Sahara, and could even take the division if they play just a little above themselves. PROGNOSIS: Second Place
