ST. LOUIS BUBONIC PLAGUE 1929 PREIVEW St. Louis showed some punch at bat last year, but nothing from the mound. They are a team with a few very good core players surrounded with mediocrity. DRAFT Bill Hallahan was an good pick, and the Plague picked eight players. Most of them, however, were just fill-ins. Grade: C+ CATCHING Luke Sewell and Jimmy Wilson as your main catchers? Sewell is average at best, and Wilson does show some promise. Rookies Roy Spencer and Ray Hayworth don't count. Grade: C- INFIELD A potent infield when you look at 1b (Jimmy Foxx/Joe Judge), 2b (Tony Lazzeri) and 3b (Joe Sewell). However, who will be shortstop. Hod Ford? Charlie Gelbert? Sewell is coming off of a career season (.350, 27 sb, 46 2b). Off the bench, they do have great, if not aging, stars: George Kelly and Eddie Collins. Grade: B+ OUTFIELD Babe Ruth, Earle Combs and Al Simmons are not a bad three starters. Edd Roush is good as a back-up, too. Beyond that, George Harper and rookie Dick "Twitchy" Porter solidify the field. Grade: A- STARTING PITCHING The great Alexander is old. Guy Bush and Sad Sam Jones are expected to anchor the rotation, but after that, who? This staff is in major need of reworking. Grade: C- BULLPEN Eddie Rommell is probably the best thing in the bullpen, and last year lead the team with 8 saves. Beyond him, there isn't much here. And with a rotation like that, you need a good bullpen, too. Grade: C- OUTLOOK This team has an excellent starting lineup, and if they stay healthy and get good pitching, they could make some noise. But let's be real. In a league with slim pitching, St. Louis has some of the slimmest. PROGNOSIS: Third Place
