PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of August 1941 is the Shortstop of the St. Louis Bubonic Plague Cecil Travis. This is the second time Cecil has won this award this year; his first win was back in April. He was the second overall pick in the 1933 draft and is a three time all-star; he is doing his part to get St. Louis back to the top of the division. Cecil is the league leader in batting average this season and is a career .305 hitter and he did nothing this month to hurt his credentials. He batted .383 (51-133) with a slugging percentage of .617 including eight doubles, four triples and five home runs. Cecil played in 24 games in August collecting at least one hit in 20 of those games including three, four-hit games. He also had an extra base hit in 15 of those 20 games he had a hit in including a 15 game hit streak to end the month. He finished with two game winning RBI to go with his 18 RBI and 29 runs scored and raised his league leading average from .369 to .372. Other Player of the Month Candidates: 3B Stan (Smiling Sam) Hack of Muskegon who was 46-118 (.390) with a slugging percentage of .500 with seven doubles and two home runs. Stan also scored 30 runs with eleven RBI with 22 walks. LF Ted (Teddy Ballgame) Williams of Pawtucket, the only reason fans even go to watch the Dutchmen play batted .363 (29-80) with a slugging percentage of .688 with two doubles and eight home runs. Ted collected 22 RBI and scored 23 times himself while adding to his league leading walk total with an additional 34 free passes. LF Roy Cullenbine of North Dallas who batted .330 (36-109) with a slugging percentage of .716 with a league leading eleven home runs, seven doubles and one triple. Roy also scored 34 runs while knocking in 19 teammates, collected 28 walks and stole a base. The Pitcher of the Month of August 1941 is Bill (Big Bill) Lee of Muskegon who was 5-0 in his five starts. Bill who was the first overall pick in the 1934 draft by then Hattiesburg and has never had a winning season in his seven year career, but assured that he would have one this season after his August performance. Bill pitched at least six innings and did not allow more than two earned runs during these starts. He finished the month an ERA of 1.32 allowing only five earned runs in 34 innings of work and struck out 25 opponents. He decreased his season ERA from 3.63 to 3.14 and he will be a key figure in Muskegon’s push to the pennant. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Whit Wyatt of Freemont who was 4-2 on the month with an ERA of 1.56 allowing only nine earned runs in 52 innings of work. Whit started six games completing five with one shutout. The only negative in Whit’s month was that he allowed 20 walks, but made up for it with 35 strikeouts and allowing only 34 hits. I bet going into the playoffs Harlem still wished Whit was a Knight. SP Elmer Riddle of Montgomery who was 4-1 in his six starts with three complete games. Elmer allowed only eleven earned runs in 49.33 innings of work giving him an ERA of 2.01 with 18 strikeouts. SP Bucky Walters of Harlem who went 4-2 on the month in seven starts including two complete games and one shutout. Bucky led the league in innings pitched with 54.33 and allowed 13 earned runs for an ERA of 2.15 with 42 strikeouts.
