PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of July 1941 is the number one draft pick in the ’39 DBS draft LF for the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen Ted (The Splendid Splinter) Williams Ted raised his season batting average to .347 by atting .392 (31 of 79) in July with a slugging percentage of .823 collecting ten home runs and four doubles. The most impressive number for Ted was his on-base percentage of .610 with the 31 hits and 44 walks against only eight strikeouts. Ted scored 25 runs with 29 RBI including five multiple run games and seven multiple RBI games. He started the month with an eleven game hit streak and a ten game base on balls streak. He also had a home run in four straight games from 7/19-7/22 and finished with one game winning RBI. Ted had at least one hit in 21 of the 25 games he played in and had a walk in 22 of those games, including 13 games with multiple walks. Other Player of the Month Candidates: RF Taffy Wright of Muskegon who batted .406 (41-101) with a slugging percentage of .584 with twelve doubles and two home runs. Taffy had twenty runs scored with 25 RBI and 13 walks. 1B Elbie Fletcher of North Dallas who batted .381 (37-97) with a slugging percentage of .701 with nine doubles, five triples and four home runs. He also stole a base with 21 runs scored and 19 RBI. CF Pete Reiser of Muskegon who batted .369 (41-111) with a slugging percentage of .685 with three doubles, a league leading seven triples and six home runs. Pete has a very good shot of passing Joe Medwick for the single season record of 30 triples in a season set back in 1934. He also has 32 runs scored and 29 RBI with ten walks and a stolen base. The Pitcher of the Month of July 1941 is 2nd round draft pick in 1939 SP Johnny Niggeling of Brooklyn. Johnny started four games in July amassing a record of 3-0 with an ERA of 1.91 allowing only six earned runs in 28.33 innings of work. Johnny had one complete game in those four starts with 15 strikeouts against nine walks and 21 hits. Johnny started the month with a poor outing allowing four earned runs in four innings, but finished strong with only two earned runs in his remaining 24.33 innings of work. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Sid Hudson of Muskegon who was 2-1 in July with an ERA on 1.57 in three starts including a complete game. Sid allowed only four earned runs in 23 innings of work while striking out 18 with only 5 walks and 20 hits. SP Max Butcher of North Dallas who went 2-0 on the month in six starts including two complete games and one shutout. Max finished with an ERA of 1.83 allowing seven earned runs in 34.33 innings of work. He struck out 21 opponents with only seven walks, but allowed 41 hits. He was benefited by having seven double plays turned for him to limit the damage of all the hits given up. SP Tommy Bridges of Montgomery who was 2-0 on the month with an ERA of 2.45 allowing twelve earned runs in 44 innings of work. He started six games in July and struck out 29 batters while giving up only 35 hits and 13 walks. Tommy won 21 games last season but will not be able to repeat that performance this season.
