PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of June 1941 is the Centerfielder for Muskegon Pete Reiser. Pete is showing that it was worth Muskegon using a second round pick on him in the 1940 draft. Pete played in 25 games in June, having at least one hit in 21 of those games, with 15 multiple hit games which included two games with five hits. Pete also recorded 14 games with extra base hits in June and had 8 multiple run games and eight multiple RBI games. Pete batted .423 (47-111), raising his season batting average from .289 to .337 and had a slugging percentage of .766 with nine doubles, seven triples and five home runs. Pete was not just a hitting machine he also led the DBS in runs scored (32) and drove in 25 teammates with a stolen base. Other Player of the Month Candidates: CF Sam Chapman of Harlem who batted .379 (44-116) with a slugging percentage of .612 with six doubles and seven home runs. Sam also scored 24 runs, knocked in 22 and had a league leading four stolen bases. RF Taffy Wright of Muskegon, along with his battery mate Pete is keeping the Thunder Dawgs in the playoff hunt batted .359 (37-103) with a slugging percentage of .553 with six doubles, one triple and four home runs. Taffy collected 21 runs, knocked in 29 teammates and had 13 walks. LF Roy Cullenbine of North Dallas who batted .356 (37-104) with a slugging percentage of .712 with a league leading 11 home runs and four doubles. Roy tied for the league lead with 32 runs scored and collected 24 RBI with 21 walks. The Pitcher of the Month of June 1941 is the Starting Pitcher of the Montgomery Burns Elmer Riddle. Elmer a second round pick in 1940 was 3-1 in June in five starts. He started out the month with a loss and finished with a no decision, but in between he was 3-0 with two complete games and a shutout. Elmer never allowed more than nine hits in a game or over three walks in a game and average only two earned runs per game. He finished with a 2.31 ERA allowing only ten earned runs in 39 innings worked, with 31 hits allowed and 24 strikeouts. Elmer was helped out by eight double plays, but did not help himself at the plate by hitting .167 (2-12) with 2 RBI. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Dutch Leonard of North Dallas. Dutch was the #1 pick back in 1933 and has not lived up to potential averaging only 10 wins per season over the past six seasons. This month Dutch was 4-2 with an ERA of 2.23 allowing only eleven earned runs in 44.33 innings of work. He allowed 31 hits in those 44 innings while striking out 17. SP Ernie White of Montgomery who was 3-1 on the month and along with his teammate Elmer is trying to get Montgomery back in the playoff hunt. Ernie started six games with two complete games and one shutout. He pitched 42.66 innings with eleven earned runs with an ERA of 2.32. Ernie allowed 30 hits and struck out 23 opponents but was hurt during the month by allowing 17 walks. SP Johnny Rigney of Brooklyn who was 3-2 in June while appearing in seven games with six starts and two complete games. The third round pick in 1940 worked in 48 innings with 13 earned runs and an ERA of 2.44. Johnny allowed 40 hits while striking out 38 and giving up 18 walks.
