PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of April 1942 is the Right fielder for the Harlem Knights Bill (Swish) Nicholson. Bill has been impressive to start the season, starting off with a ten game hit streak and getting at least one hit in 14 of the 17 games the Knights had in April. In his forth year in the DBS Bill is becoming one of the most dependable hitters in the league. He finished the month with a .409 (27-66) batting average and a slugging percentage of .682 with six doubles and four home runs. Bill had two or more hits in nine games and an extra base hit in eight games including a five game extra base hit streak which included five doubles and a home run. Bill ended the month with ten runs scored and eleven RBI with a stolen base. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Taffy Wright of Muskegon who batted .419 (26-62) with a slugging percentage of .516 which included two doubles and two triples. He also collected 17 runs scored, five RBI and was walked 13 times with a stolen base. 1B Johnny (The Big Cat) Mize of Brooklyn who batted .386 (27-70) with a slugging percentage of .557 with four doubles, one triple and two home runs. Johnny also knocked in 13 of his teammates and scored ten times himself with a stolen base. 2B Joe (Flash) Gordon of Montgomery who finished the month batting .371 (23-62) with a slugging percentage of .548 with three doubles, one triple and two home runs. Joe also had ten RBI and scored seven runs. The Pitcher of the Month of April 1942 is the Relief Pitcher from Montgomery Johnny Humphries. Johnny did not have a very large workload this month, but was highly effective in the outings he did appear in. Johnny appeared in six games and had a total of five innings of work. In those five innings Johnny collected two wins and two saves while not allowing an earned run, struck out two opponents and allowed only five hits. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Bill Lohrman of Muskegon who was 2-1 during April with an ERA of 1.42 with four earned runs in his 25.33 innings of work. Bill started three games with one complete game shutout, and struck out 10 batters. SP Johnny (The Dutch Master) Vander Meer of Muskegon who was 2-1 during the month with an ERA of 1.26 giving up four earned runs in 20.66 innings of work. Johnny had four starts in April and struck out 27 batters and allowed only eighteen hits.
