PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of August 1942 is the Right Fielder of the Freemont Furtraders and five time all star Mel (Master Melvin) Ott. In his fifteenth season in the DBS the second round pick back in 1928 is showing the younger guys how this game is played. He batted .370 in August (37-100) with a slugging percentage of .610 that included three doubles and seven home runs. Mel played in 30 games and had at least one hit in 22 of those games including ten multiple hit games, his best a 5-5 effort on the 23rd of the month. Mel collected nineteen RBI, scored twenty runs and had an On Base Percentage of .479 aided by his 21 walks. He increased his season batting average to a more respectable level from .242 to .270 and had two game winning RBI. Mel was the MVP of the DBS back in 1935, has won three championships and is the current career leader in runs scored and walks. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Stan (Stan the Man) Musial of St. Louis who batted .368 (42-117) with a slugging percentage of .650 with nine doubles, three triples and six home runs. Stan also knocked in fourteen teammates and scored 23 times himself with two stolen bases. LF Ted (Teddy Ballgame) Williams of Pawtucket who batted .358 (34-95) for the month with a slugging percentage of .653 with seven doubles and seven triples and had an on base percentage of .500. He collected 18 RBI and scored 22 times, with 27 walks and two stolen bases. 1B Les (Moe) Fleming of Freemont who benefits from batting in front of Mel Ott batted .345 (38-110) in August with a slugging percentage of .609. Les hit five doubles and eight home runs driving in 22 teammates and scored twenty runs himself. The Pitcher of the Month of August 1942 is the starting pitcher for the Montgomery Burns Mort Cooper. Mort in his fourth season in the DBS is starting to become the pitcher Montgomery hoped he would be when they selected him with the third pick in the 1938 draft. Mort was 4-1 on the month in five starts with two complete games and one shutout. In those five starts he pitched 41 innings allowing eleven earned runs giving him an ERA of 2.41. He pitched at least seven innings in each of his starts and had a quality start in all but one of his appearances, his only non quality start was his only loss. Mort struck out 33 opponents while walking only eight and allowed only 31 hits. He also lowered his season ERA from 3.77 to 3.47 and increased his record to 15-4. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Ace Adams of Brooklyn who was 2-1 with eight saves with an ERA of 0.59 allowing one earned run in 15.33 innings of work. Ace appeared in twelve games with ten strikeouts and fourteen hits. Not bad for a forth round pick in 1941. SP Tiny Bonham of Montgomery who was 5-0 in August with an ERA of 2.79 allowing twelve earned runs in 38.66 innings of work. Tiny started five games, striking out fifteen and only allowing three walks. Tiny along with Mort have powered Montgomery into the playoffs. SP Max Butcher of North Dallas who was 4-1 in six starts with one complete game. He finished with an ERA of 3.21 allowing fifteen earned runs in 42 innings of work with nineteen strikeouts.
