PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of July 1942 is the third pick in the 1936 draft 1B of Brooklyn Johnny (The Big Cat) Mize. Johnny (who currently leads the DBS in RBI) had a strong month at the plate, batting .388 (40-103) with a slugging percentage of .621 which included eight doubles, two triples and four home runs. Johnny started out the month with a 17 game hit streak and had at least one hit in 20 of the 24 games he played in during the month, including eleven games with two or more hits. He was tied for the league lead in RBI with 26 and scored 21 runs. Johnny also has had four game winning RBI, increased his batting average from .294 to .322 and collected eleven walks. Other Player of the Month Candidates: CF Pete Reiser of Muskegon who batted .432 (38-88) with a slugging percentage of .602 with ten doubles, one triple and a home run. Last months player of the month continued his hot batting by knocking in 13 RBI and scoring 16 runs with a stolen base. 1B Elbie Fletcher of North Dallas who batted .366 (37-101) with a league leading slugging percentage, on base percentage and home runs (.663/.488/9). He would have won player of the month however he only had 16 RBI and twenty runs scored. Elbie also had three doubles and was walked 24 times. CF Joe (The Yankee Clipper) DiMaggio of Montgomery who batted .339 (39-115) for the month with a slugging percentage of .626 with eight home runs, five doubles and two triples. Joe also had 24 RBI and 22 runs with seven walks and a stolen base. The Pitcher of the Month of July 1942 is 2nd pick in the 1934 draft by then Sahara now Brooklyn SP Curt (Coonskin) Davis. Curt started six games, with five quality starts in July which included two complete games and one shutout. He finished with a record of 4-1 with an ERA of 2.03 allowing ten earned runs in 44.33 innings of work. Curt started out the month strong with a three wins and a shutout in his first four starts, and was strong in his fifth start pitching seven innings with only two earned runs, but could not get any run support. He ended the month with 27 strike outs and lowered his ERA from 3.23 to 2.85. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Johnny Humphries of Montgomery with a record of 2-0 with four saves and an ERA of 0.73 allowing one earned run in 12.33 innings of work. Johnny appeared in nine games, striking our three and allowed only eleven hits. SP Ray (Ironman) Starr of Harlem who appears not to have missed any steps even though being traded in the middle of the month. He was 3-1 on the month in five starts with two complete games and a shutout. He had an ERA of 1.38 allowing only six earned runs in 39 innings of work, with 21 strikeouts. He was 2-0 with Muskegon with an ERA of 0.36, for Harlem he was 1-1 with an ERA of 3.21. RP Ace Adams of Brooklyn who was 1-1 with 8 saves in July with an ERA of 1.84, allowing three earned runs in 14.66 innings of work. He appeared in fifteen games in July striking out ten and allowing only ten hits.
