PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of June 1942 is the Centerfielder for Muskegon Pete Reiser. Pete he also won this award in June of 1941. Over the past two seasons Pete has shown he was more than worthy of his 2nd round pick in 1940. For the month he batted .393 (46-117) with a slugging percentage of .684. Pete is doing his part to keep Muskegon within striking position of Montgomery as the end of the season approaches. He raised his league leading batting average from .390 to .391 while hitting nine doubles, two triples and seven home runs. Pete started out the month with an eleven game hit streak and had at least one hit in 24 of 27 games during June. He had twelve games with two or more hits including a four hit game and had four game winning RBI. He also collected 23 runs, knocked in 18 RBI and stole three bases. Other Player of the Month Candidates: CF Stan Spence of Harlem who batted .362 (34-94) with a slugging percentage of .638 with nine doubles, one triple and five home runs. He had 21 runs scored and 18 RBI with ten walks and a stolen base. LF Ted (The Kid) Williams of Pawtucket who slipped this month by his standards, but still batted .357 (30-84) with a league leading slugging percentage of .714 with seven home runs, seven doubles and a triple. He scored 23 runs while knocking in 16 teammates. Ted also led the league in walks with 33 and On Base Percentage of .550 and stole two bases. CF Joe (The Yankee Clipper) DiMaggio of Montgomery who did not have a high batting average by his standards .291 (30-103) but he led the league in home runs with 9 and RBI with 27. He also scored 24 runs walked eleven times and had a slugging percentage of .583. The Pitcher of the Month of June 1942 is the Starting Pitcher of the Montgomery Burns Mort Cooper. Mort is coming into form after being the third pick in the 1938 draft. He finished the month with a 4-1 record in six starts with an ERA of 2.56 allowing 13 earned runs in 45.66 innings of work. For the month Mort did not allow more than six hits in any game or four walks and finished with a strikeout to walk ratio of 3:1. He lowered his ERA from 3.90 to 3.31 with 36 strikeouts and twelve walks. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Hugh (Fireman) Casey of North Dallas who appeared in fifteen games in June collecting nine saves. He had an ERA of 1.45 with three earned runs in 18.66 innings of work with sixteen strikeouts. SP Cliff (Mickey Mouse) Melton of Harlem who was 4-1 on the month with an ERA of 2.23 with twelve earned runs in 48.33 innings of work. Cliff appeared in nine games with seven starts, two complete games and one shutout. RP Max Lanier of Montgomery who appeared in fifteen games with a record of 4-0 and two saves. Max had an ERA of 2.57 with six earned runs in 21 innings of work and fifteen strikeouts.
