PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of May 1942 is the LF for the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen and current MVP Ted (The Thumper) Williams. Ted was on fire for the month of May and showed why he deserved the MVP honors last season. He led the DBS in almost all offensive categories including average .475, slugging percentage .889, on-base percentage .615, home runs 10, hits 47, RBI 31, walks 36 and total bases with 88. Ted appeared in 31 games in May getting at least one hit in 26 of those games and 15 multiple hit games. He also had at least one walk in twenty two games and an extra base hit in sixteen games including a two home run game on the 27th. He finished with three game winning RBI, had a 12 game hitting streak, ten multiple RBI games, seven multiple run games and scored 29 runs. Ted raised his league leading batting average from .294 to .423 and is poised to win the Triple Crown this season. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Jeff Heath of North Dallas who batted .435 (30-69) in May with a slugging average of .739 with ten doubles, one triple and three home runs. Jeff also scored eighteen runs and knocked in seven teammates. CF Pete Reiser of Muskegon who batted .388 (40-103) with a slugging average of .602 collecting five doubles, one triple and five home runs. Pete was walked 15 times in May, scored 20 runs while knocking in 23 and stole six bases. C Babe (Blimp) Phelps of Freemont who finished with an average of .320 (33-103) and a slugging percentage of .573 with seven home runs and five doubles. Babe also knocked in 24 and scored 14 runs. The Pitcher of the Month of May 1942 is the SP for the Harlem Knights Al Benton. Al had a strong month putting together a record of 4-0 in seven appearances with six starts. In each of AL's six starts he did not allow more than two earned runs and a walk to strikeout ratio of 1:2. He pitched 38.33 innings in May with an ERA of 1.41 allowing only six earned runs in those innings of work and lowered his ERA from 4.32 to 2.29. Al is coming into his own as a starter this season after being a relief pitcher for most of his career after being selected in the first round pick back in 1934. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Si Johnson of Pawtucket who was 3-0 in May prior to his injury with an ERA of 1.67 allowing five earned runs in 27 innings of work. Si also had one complete game shutout gave up only 18 hits and struck out twelve. SP Cliff (Mountain Music) Melton of Harlem who was 3-1 in May with an ERA of 2.27 in seven starts with one complete game shutout. Cliff pitched 47.66 innings allowing twelve earned runs with 25 strikeouts. RP Fritz Ostermueller of Pawtucket, who was once referenced as “Shitz Ostermueller” by a former DBS reporter is trying to make up for seasons past. In May he was 1-0 with seven saves in sixteen appearances. Fritz pitched 15.66 innings with four earned runs giving him an ERA of 2.30.
