PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of September 1942 is the CF for the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen George Case. George is not known for his power or RBI output, but what he lacks in power he makes up for with speed. George put in his best month of the season batting .367 (44-120) and a respectable slugging percentage of .500 (seven doubles and three home runs). The key for George is to get on base, when that happens the fun begins. George stole 21 bases and was only caught three times (.870) which gave him a total of 71 on the season and allowed him to break the single season record that was held by Lloyd Waner (48) back in 1928 and was the longest single season record left standing in an offensive category (Burleigh Grimes owns the oldest pitching record with 24 complete games in 1928). George had a stolen base streak that spanned five games from the 21st through the 25th and had seven stolen bases during that time. George a second round draft pick back in '37 also scored 30 times and had ten RBI with nine walks. He started the month with an 18 game hit streak and had at least one hit in 25 of the 28 games played and had two or more hits in 14 games. George raised his batting average from .280 to .296 and is only 16 stolen bases away from the career record held by Paul Waner (155). Other Player of the Month Candidates: SS Johnny Pesky of Freemont who batted .382 (47-123) and a slugging percentage of .520 with seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. Johnny knocked in six teammates and scored 18 times himself with six stolen bases and ten walks. Johnny finished the season with a league leading 243 hits. CF Wally Judnich of Freemont who was a second round pick back in 1940 batted .372 (29-78) with a slugging percentage of .641 with four doubles, a triple and five home runs. Wally also collected 18 runs, knocked in 17 and was walked 19 times. 3B Stan (Smiling Stan) Hack of Muskegon batted .371 (33-89) with a slugging percentage of .517 with seven doubles and two home runs. Stan who was selected fourth overall back in 1932 scored 20 runs, knocked in 17 with 24 walks and four stolen bases. The Pitcher of the Month of September 1942 is SP Max Butcher of the North Dallas Forty. Max who was the eighth overall selection back in 1936 had a career month by going 4-0 in six starts with three complete games and two shutouts. Max finished with an ERA of 1.11 allowing six earned runs in 48.66 innings of work. All of Max's starts this month were quality starts, pitching at least six innings for each start and never allowing more than six hits in a game. He only allowed 29 hits on the month and struck out 15 and improved his record from 8-5 with a 3.56 ERA to 12-5 with a 2.88 ERA. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Ace Adams of Brooklyn who was 3-1 on the month with six saves and an ERA of 2.04 with four earned runs in 17.66 innings of work. Ace appeared in 16 games with eight strikeouts and was the league leader in saves for the season with 30. Not bad for a fourth round pick back in 1941. SP Spud Chandler who was 3-1 on the month in five starts with two complete games. Spud finished the month with an ERA of 2.11 allowing ten earned runs in 42.66 innings of work with 22 strikeouts and 43 hits allowed. SP Johnny (Double No-Hit) Vander Meer who was 3-0 in seven starts in September with an ERA of 2.27 wit ten earned runs in 39.66 innings of work. Johnny struck out 34 gave up 28 hits and walked 14.
