PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of April 1943 is the Center fielder for North Dallas Forty Augie Galan. Augie has been a consistent outfielder for North Dallas since he was drafted in the 1st round in 1934. He along with his fellow North Dallas teammates have started the 1943 season with something to prove. Augie batted .373 (25-67) with a slugging percentage of .701 which included five doubles, one triple and five home runs. Augie started out the season with a fourteen game hit streak which included a six game streak of at least one multiple base hit. Also Augie hit a home run in three consecutive games from the 13th to the 16th. He collected three game winning RBI in his total of thirteen for the month and scored 21 times. Augie was walked fourteen times while striking out only seven times and finished with an on-base percentage of .488. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Jeff Heath of North Dallas who batted .417 (20-48) with a slugging percentage of .792 with six home runs. Jeff also knocked in eighteen scored eleven times and collected eight walks. Pawtucket to this day wonders if they should have traded Jeff away back in 1936. RF Ron Northey of Pawtucket who in his first season with the big club is batting .379 in April with a slugging percentage of .667 with five doubles, one triple and four home runs. Ron also knocked in seventeen teammates and scored fourteen times himself with seven walks. RF Stan (Stan the Man) Musial of St. Louis who was the number one pick back in 1941 batted .368 (28-76) with a slugging percentage of .671. Stan hit eight doubles, a league leading three triples and three home runs. He was walked thirteen times, scored sixteen runs and knocked in nine. The Pitcher of the Month of April 1943 is the Starting Pitcher of St. Louis Bubonic Plague Schoolboy Rowe. Schoolboy who St. Louis acquired from North Dallas back in 1933 for a 1934 first round pick, keeps on pitching well for the plague. Schoolboy started four games in April completing three of them including two shutouts. He finished with an ERA of 1.54 allowing only six earned runs in 35 innings of work and a record of 3-1. His WHIP in April was 0.80 with 23 hits and five walks against eleven strikeouts. Schoolboy also helped himself out at the plate with a batting average of .286 (4-14) with three runs scored, one RBI and a home run. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Nels (Nellie) Potter of North Dallas who prior to this season has only had 84 innings of work since he was drafted in the first round of the 1936 draft. Persistence pays off and it looks like Nels will be seeing the ball a lot this season in North Dallas. Nels appeared in ten games in April amassing a record of 1-0 and two saves. His ERA was 1.50 with three earned runs in eighteen innings of work with fourteen strikeouts. SP Milo Candini of Harlem who was drafted in the fourth round of the 1943 draft is showing his worth early. Milo was 3-0 in three starts with and ERA of 2.22, allowing six earned runs in 24.33 innings of work with twelve strikeouts. SP Harry (Harry the Cat) Brecheen of Brooklyn who was 3-1 in four starts with two complete games and one shutout. Harry was draft with the first overall pick this season and is starting his bid for Rookie of the Year. He finished with an ERA of 2.41 allowing nine earned runs in 33.66 innings of work and struck out eighteen opponents.
