PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of August 1943 is the Right Fielder of the Harlem Knights Bill (Swish) Nicholson. Bill was the 5th overall pick in 1936 for St. Louis and later traded to Harlem in 1937 and is making his claim as an everyday outfielder the past four seasons. Bill led the league in August in these offensive categories: Batting Average (.412) Slugging Percentage (.746), Hits (47), Home Runs (11), Total Bases (85), Runs (27) and RBI (35). Bill played in 25 games in August, having at least one hit in 21 of those games and had two or more hits in fourteen games, with one four hit and one five hit game. He also had six multiple run games and eight multiple RBI games, including six game winning RBI. Bill had a home run in three straight games from 8-24 through 8-26 and had an extra base hit in 13 games, while raising his batting average from .282 to .311. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Eric (Dukie) Tipton of Montgomery who is in his rookie campaign after being a sixth round pick back in 1939. He batted .352 (38-108) with a slugging percentage of .574 with ten doubles, one triple and four home runs. Eric also scored 23 runs, while knocking in 20 with one stolen base and ten walks. SS Arky Vaughn of Harlem who was the June player of the month batted .333 (37-111) with a slugging percentage of .468, collecting six doubles, and three home runs. He also knocked in sixteen teammates while scoring eighteen runs himself with two stolen bases. 2B Joe (Flash) Gordon of Montgomery the number two pick in 1938 batted .321 (34-106) in August with a slugging percentage of .604 with five doubles, two triples and seven home runs. Joe scored 22 runs and knocked in 24 teammates and was walked fourteen times. The Pitcher of the Month of August 1943 is the starting pitcher for the Muskegon Thunder Dawgs Hal (Prince Hal) Newhouser. Hal appeared in eight games in August with six starts and two complete games. He finished with a record of 3-1 and an ERA of 1.58 allowing only eight earned runs in 45.66 innings of work. Hal struck out 36 opponents while only walking ten and allowing 29 hits, giving him a WHIP of 0.85. He batted .214 (3-14) in August, but had a double and a home run with two runs scored and two RBI. Prince Hal was a first round pick back in 1939 and is in his second season as a started for Muskegon and is starting to become an elite pitcher in the DBS. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Virgil (Fire) Trucks of Harlem who was the fourth pick in 1941 was 3-1 with an ERA of 1.78 allowing seven earned runs in 35.33 innings of work. He also struck out twenty two with six walks in five starts with two complete games and one shutout. SP Cliff (Mickey Mouse) Melton of Harlem who went 4-0 in August in six appearances with five starts and three complete games. He finished with an ERA of 2.08 with nine earned runs in 39 innings with eleven strikeouts. SP Schoolboy Rowe of St. Louis and the winner of this award back in April was 4-1 for the month with and ERA of 2.49 with thirteen earned runs in 47 innings of work. Schoolboy started six games with four complete games and two shutouts and nineteen strikeouts.
