PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of July 1943 is the number one pick in the 1941 draft, the right fielder of the St. Louis Bubonic Plague Stan (Stan the Man) Musial. Stan was the runner up for this award in June and May, but was able to gain the top honors in July due to his superb play. Stan led the DBS in Batting Average (.456), On Base Percentage (.516), Slugging Percentage (.754), Hits (52), runs scored (28) and extra base hits (18). He appeared in 26 games in July, getting at least one hit in 24 of those games including a fifteen game hit streak to end the month. Stan had seventeen multiple hit games including two four hit games and collected two game winning RBI. The Man hit eight doubles, four triples and six home runs while knocking in 20 runs and stealing two bases. By doing this Stan was able to raise his league leading batting average by 27 points from .359 to .386. He is still one of the youngest players in the league (22) in this his third season, but is showing he can play with the big boys. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Jeff Heath of North Dallas who continues to perform at a high level this season, by batting .403 (31-77) in July with a slugging percentage of .753. This included two doubles, two triples and seven home runs with twenty runs scored and a league leading 26 RBI. 2B Bobby Doerr of Brooklyn, the first pick in the 1937 draft batted .343 (36-105) with a slugging percentage of .533 which included five doubles and five home runs. Bobby also knocked in 22 teammates while scoring twenty times himself and stealing a base. RF Ron Northey of Pawtucket who was a late pick in the 1942 draft is having a strong rookie campaign including batting .330 (38-115) in July with a slugging percentage of .591. Ron hit three doubles and nine home runs for the month with nineteen runs scored and 21 RBI. The Pitcher of the Month of July 1943 is 8th pick back in the 1932 draft and relief pitcher for the Harlem Knights Johnny (Fireman) Murphy. Johnny is having another strong season for the Knights and is nearing the all time save record. Adding to those totals this month by appearing in seventeen games compiling a 2-1 record and saving seven games. He pitched a combined 21.33 innings while only allowing four earned runs for an ERA of 1.69. Johnny did not allow an earned run in his first seven appearances in July and lowered his season ERA from 2.33 to 2.15. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Nels (Nellie) Potter of North Dallas who was 3-1 with an ERA of 2.88 in July allowing eleven earned runs in 34.33 innings of work. Nels appeared in twelve games during the month starting two of those games and struck out 19 opponents. SP The third pick in the 1939 draft Dizzy Trout of Montgomery. Dizzy was 4-1 in July with an ERA of 2.92 allowing 16 earned runs in 49.33 innings of work. He started six games, completing three of them and collected 21 strikeouts. SP Last months winner of this award Nate Andrews of Muskegon who shows no signs of slowing down this season. Nate is making a strong run for rookie of the year honors by going 4-0 in July with an ERA of 3.12 allowing twenty earned runs in 57.66 innings of work. He started seven games for the Dawgs competing two of them while striking out 27 opposing batters against only six walks.
