PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of June 1943 is the Shortstop of the Freemont Furtraders and former #1 draft pick (1932) Arky Vaughn. Arky has been a mainstay for Freemont at the shortstop position since he was originally drafted, including multiple player of the month awards and several All-Star appearances and shows no signs of slowing down. Arky batted .388 (47-121) with a slugging percentage of .719 which included ten home runs and ten doubles. He appeared in all 26 games for Freemont in June and had at least one hit in 24 of those games including 14 multiple games. Arky scored 29 runs and knocked in 25 teammates while being walked eight times and stealing three bases. He raised his season batting average from .306 to .340 and had one game winning RBI. Other Player of the Month Candidates: RF Stan (Stan the Man) Musial of St. Louis who batted .364 (44-121) with a slugging percentage of .595, including six doubles, five triples and four home runs. Stan also scored 28 runs with eleven RBI was walked 16 times and stole a base. CF Augie Galan of North Dallas who batted .360 (45-125) with a slugging percentage of .536 with ten doubles and four home runs. Augie who was the 8th pick in the 1934 draft scored 23 runs with 20 RBI and collected 17 walks. RF Roy Cullenbine of North Dallas who batted .359 (37-103) with a slugging percentage of .680 with nine doubles, three triples and six home runs. He had 20 RBI with 28 runs scored and was walked 16 times. The Pitcher of the Month of June 1943 is the Starting Pitcher of the Muskegon Thunder Dawgs Nate Andrews. Nate who was a 4th round draft pick back in 1937 is making his rookie debut this season for the Dawgs after spending the first six years of his career in the minors and he is making the most of it. Nate started off slow in the first two months of the season ending with a record of 3-5 and an ERA of 4.48, but pulled it together in June going 5-1 in seven starts with three complete games and two shutouts and an ERA of 1.89. He won his first three starts to begin the month including back to back shutouts against Brooklyn and ended the month with two wins. Nate pitched in 52.33 innings allowing only eleven earned runs and struck out 21 batters, while helping himself at the plate by hitting two home runs. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: SP Johnny Niggeling of Brooklyn who was 4-2 on the month in six starts and four complete games. He pitched 50 innings allowing only eleven earned runs for an ERA of 1.98 with 32 strikeouts. RP Johnny (Grandma of Fordham Johnny) Murphy of Harlem who was 2-1 on the month with five saves appearing in 19 games. He finished the month with an ERA of 2.52 allowing seven earned runs in 25 innings of work with 13 strikeouts. SP Spud Chandler of Montgomery the 6th pick in the 1937 draft was 6-0 in June with an ERA of 2.67 allowing 16 earned runs in 54 innings of work. Spud appeared in seven games, starting six with four complete games and one shutout. He also struck out 41 opponents but was hurt by the long ball, giving up six homeruns.
