PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of September 1944 is the RF for the Harlem Knights Bill (Swish) Nicholson. Bill also won the award last month and will hopefully carry his productive regular season into the playoffs. He batted .331 (45-136) for the month with a slugging percentage of .588 with ten home runs and five doubles. His on base percentage was .397 aided by his 15 walks and he collected 34 RBI and scored 28 times. Bill appeared in 27 games in September with at least one hit in 22 of them and 13 multiple hit games. He led the league in hits (45), home runs (10), RBI (34), extra base hits (15) and total bases (80) and collected four game winning RBI. Other Player of the Month Candidates: 2B Lonny (Junior) Frey of North Dallas who was a first round draft pick in 1933. Lonny batted .402 (35-87) during the month with a slugging percentage of .655 with three doubles, two triples and five home runs. Lonny also knocked in 23 RBI and scored 17 times with a stolen base. C Buddy Rosar of North Dallas who led the league in average for September batting .463 (37-80) with a slugging percentage of .625 with seven doubles and two home runs. Buddy a fifth round pick in 1939 collected 21 RBI and scored eleven runs. RF Stan (Stan the Man) Musial of St. Louis who batted .382 (42-110) on the month with a slugging percentage of .627 with seven doubles, one triple and six home runs. Stan a strong candidate for the MVP has had a consistent season and finished it off with 18 runs scored, ten RBI and 22 walks The Pitcher of the Month of September 1944 is SP of the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen Orval Grove who started out the season as the ace of the staff and then proceeded to lose his first thirteen games. He has since turned his season around finishing the season with a 5-2 September with an ERA of 2.93, giving him an overall record in 1943 of 10-17. Orval appeared in seven games during the month, starting six of them with four complete games and two shutouts. He pitched 46 innings allowing only fifteen earned runs while striking out 22. He lowered his season ERA from 5.34 to 4.78 and was able to win his last three starts of the year which should help with his confidence going into next season. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Ray Scarborough of Brooklyn who was 4-1 with two saves in twelve appearances during the month and an ERA of 1.47. Ray a fifth round pick in 1942 of Pawtucket was cut before training camp was complete and was later claimed by Brooklyn as a free agent has found a home as a closer. He pitched 18.33 innings with three earned runs and ten strike outs. RP Bill (Bullfrog) Dietrich of Muskegon who was 4-0 in ten appearances with an ERA of 2.02 with three earned runs in 13.33 innings. SP Jim (Abba Dabba) Tobin of North Dallas who was 5-1 in seven starts with two complete games and one shutout. Jim had an ERA of 2.83 with fifteen earned runs in 47.66 innings of work. Jim has been one of the most consistent pictures the past few seasons and this year was more of the same rewarding North Dallas after they used a second round pick on him in 1937.
