PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of August 1944 is the Right Fielder for the Harlem Knights Dixie (The Peoples Choice) Walker. Dixie who was a second round pick back in 1931 has been a spot player for most of his career until this season. For the month of August Dixie batted .361 (44-122) with a slugging percentage of .590 with eleven doubles, one triple and five home runs. Dixie played in 28 games in August having at least one hit in 21 of those games, with 16 multiple hit games including one four hit game. He raised his batting average from .342 to .347 and was responsible for four game winning RBI. He also knocked in 17 RBI, scored 20 runs and was walked twelve times Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Dick Wakefield of Muskegon who batted .349 (29-83) with a slugging percentage of .506 with four doubles and three home runs. Last months player of the month continued his hot offense contributing 22 runs scored, fifteen RBI and eighteen walks. SS Vern (Junior) Stephens of Muskegon who is benefiting from batting behind Dick Wakefield and is taking advantage of it. Vern batted .345 (29-84) with a slugging percentage of .548 with eight doubles and three home runs. He also contributed twelve runs scored, 21 RBI and thirteen walks. 2B Bobby Doerr of Brooklyn, who is in his seventh season after being the number one pick back in 1937, batted .339 (39-115) in August with a slugging percentage of .530. Bobby finished with eight doubles, four triples and two home runs to go with his 20 runs and RBI, fifteen walks and three stolen bases. The Pitcher of the Month of August 1944 is the starting pitcher for the Harlem Knights Bobo (Buck) Newsom. Bobo who was a forth round pick back in 1929 has continued his strong pitching by going 5-1 in August. His ERA for the month was 1.49 allowing eight earned runs in 48.33 innings of work. He started seven games completing one of them with 42 strikeouts and did not allow a home run. He went at least seven innings in five of his seven starts and lowered his season ERA from 4.13 to 3.52. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Gordon (Maltzy) Maltzberger of Brooklyn who was 3-0 with seven saves in August in fifteen appearances. His ERA for the month was 1.31 allowing three earned runs in 20.66 innings. Maltzy a fourth round pick in 1943 struck out 16 while only allowing fifteen hits. SP Bob Muncrief of North Dallas who was 4-0 with an ERA of 2.45 allowing thirteen earned runs in 47.66 innings of work. Bob started six games, completing three of them and struck out 35 opponents. SP Bucky Walters of Harlem the CY Young winner back in 1939 appears to have it all working again for him this season. Bucky was 6-0 in August in eight starts with an ERA of 3.39 allowing 23 earned runs in a league leading 61 innings of work.
