PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of June 1944 is the Right Fielder Stan (Stan the Man) Musial of the St. Louis Bubonic Plague. The current MVP and two-time all-star is still producing at a level that has not been seen since Lou Gehrig and Chuck Klein. Stan appeared in 27 games in June having at least one hit in 25 games with an extra base hit in 21 games including a nine game streak. He had 16 multiple hit games including six; three hit games and one; four hit game. Stan led the league in almost every offensive category including batting average (.450), on-base percentage (.545), slugging percentage (.844), hits (49), doubles (16), triples (6), runs (31) and stolen bases (7). He also knocked in 21 RBI, was walked 20 times and had two game winning RBI. Stan raised his batting average during the month from .328 to .374. Other Player of the Month Candidates: LF Dick Wakefield of Muskegon who batted .396 (36-91) with a slugging percentage of .714 with six doubles, one triple and seven home runs. Dick also knocked in 21 teammates and scored 25 times with 23 walks. 3B Stan (Smiling Stan) Hack of Muskegon a first round draft pick in 1932 and two time all-star in 37 and 39. Stan batted .337 (35-104) with a slugging percentage of .471 with five doubles and three home runs. Stan scored 26 times knocked in 10 RBI and stole one base. 3B Ken (Butch) Keltner of North Dallas. Ken was the eighth over all pick back in 1937 and batted .324 (35-108) for the month with a slugging percentage of .657 with five doubles, two triples and nine home runs. Ken also scored 23 runs, knocked in 25, was walked eleven times and stole three bases. The Pitcher of the Month of June 1944 is Dizzy Trout of Montgomery, who was the third overall pick in 1939, after Ted Williams and Hal Newhouser. Dizzy had an exceptional month pitching as well as his teammate Mort Cooper. He finished the month with a perfect record going 4-0 adding to his season total bring his overall record to 10-0. He started five games, with a complete game shutout allowing only ten earned runs over 39.66 innings for an ERA of 2.27. Dizzy struck out 28 batters while only walking eight and dropped his season ERA form 3.31 to 2.91. He helped himself out at the plate batting .267 (4-15) with three runs scored and a double. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Gordon (Maltzy) Maltzberger of Brooklyn who in his rookie season is making a strong impact. Gordon was 3-1 in June with seven saves, appearing in twelve games. His ERA for the month was 1.15 with two earned runs allowed in 15.66 innings of work. SP Bill (Ninety-six) Voiselle of Pawtucket a fourth round pick in 1942 is trying to turn his season around going 3-0 on the month in five starts with two complete games and a shutout. Bill had an ERA of 2.13 with nine earned runs in 38 innings of work with 25 strikeouts. SP Bucky Walters of Harlem a first round draft pick in 1931 who had a DBS record 23 win season in 1939 and averages 15 wins per season is still going strong. Bucky was 5-0 in June in eight starts including three complete games and one shutout. Bucky pitched in 61.66 innings, allowing 21 earned runs and finishing with an ERA of 3.06 with 31 strikeouts.
