PLAYER of the MONTH The Player for the Month of August 1945 is the 1B and two time MVP and four time all star of the DBS Jimmie (Double XX) Foxx. Jimmie who was the 11th overall pick in the inaugural draft back in 1928 is going out with a bang showing those young guys in St. Louis how it is done. Jimmie raised his season average from .241 to .259 by batting .325 in August with a league leading slugging percentage of .692. Jimmie also led the league in home runs (12), runs scored (24) and extra base hits (18). He accumulated five doubles, one triple and 22 RBI. In August Jimmie had three game winning RBI and twelve games where he had at least two hits. If this truly is his last season in the DBS he is going out in style. Other Player of the Month Candidates: 3B Stan (Smiling Stan) Hack of Muskegon who is a two time all star and was the fourth overall pick in 1932 by then Hattiesburg batted a league leading .436 (44-101) with nine doubles, two triples, 22 runs scored and twelve RBI. 2B Snuffy Stirnweiss of Montgomery the 8th overall pick in 1943 batted .382 (47-123) with ten doubles, five triples and one home run. Snuffy also collected 18 RBI and scored twenty times with three stolen bases. 2B Skeeter Newsome of Harlem who was signed as a free agent in 1942 after originally being drafted by North Dallas in 1935, but never played for them. Skeeter batted .371 (36-97) with 11 doubles, one home run, eleven runs scored and 23 RBI. The Pitcher of the Month of August 1945 is the Starting Pitcher Harry (Harry the Cat) Brecheen the number one pick in the 1940 draft in his third year as a starter is really paying dividends now. Harry was 4-1 in August with an ERA of 0.91 allowing four earned runs in 39.66 innings of work. Harry started five games and completed four of them while striking out thirteen and finishing with a WHIP of 0.93. Harry lost his first start of the month against Muskegon, but came back five days later against Muskegon and avenged his loss with a complete game win allowing only one earned run. He then went on to win his next three games and never allowed more then one earned run in all five of his starts. Harry improved his season record from 5-8 to 9-9 and lowered his ERA from 3.96 to 3.16. Other Pitcher of the Month Candidates: RP Mort Cooper of Montgomery who in sixteen games was 102 with seven saves. Mort pitched 17.33 innings with four earned runs and an ERA of 2.08 with eight strikeouts. SP Bill (Bullfrog) Dietrich of St. Louis who was a free agent signing in 1942 and was originally drafted as a second overall pick back in 1933. Bill was 4-1 in August with and ERA of 2.23 in six starts and four complete games. Bill pitched 48.33 innings with twelve earned runs and fifteen strikeouts. SP Bobo Newsom of Harlem originally a fourth round pick in 1929 by Pawtucket is still haunting them to this day. Bobo was 6-1 in August in seven starts with four complete games with an ERA of 2.47 with sixteen earned runs in 58.33 innings of work with 25 strikeouts.
