Peter Appleton, 69, ex-majors pitcher
WOODBRIDGE - Peter W. Appleton, 69, of 1279 George Ave., a former major league baseball pitcher and the husband of Aldona Appleton, a retired judge of the Middlesex County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, died yesterday in St. Francis Hospital, Trenton.
Mr. Appleton concluded his 11-year baseball career in 1945 with a lifetime win-loss record of 53-66.
He played with six American League teams including the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Browns. He broke in with the Cincinnati Reds in 1927. He had his best year in 1936 when he compiled a 14-9 record for the Senators where he ended his career in 1945.
Mr. Appleton, pitching for the Montreal Royals in 1935, was named the best pitcher in the Triple A minor league.
He was born in Terryville, Conn., in 1904 as Peter William Jablonowski. He legally changed his name in 1933. A graduate of the University of Michigan, he received a degree in education from Rutgers University. He also attended New Jersey Law School.
Mr. Appleton was a communicant of St. Stephen's R.C. Church, Perth Amboy, and was a life member of Lodge 784, BPO Elks and the New York Hot Stove Baseball Player's Association and the New York Hot Stove League of Professional Baseball Old Timers Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three brothers, Joseph, John and Alex, all of Terrysville, Conn. Services will be held Tuesday at a time to be announced by the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 424 East Ave., Perth Amboy.
