Biography

LARRY BENTON, 55, HURLED FOR GIANTS
Top National League Pitcher in 1928 with 25-9 record dies playing golf in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI, April 3 – Lawrence (Larry) Benton, former right-handed pitcher for the Boston Braves, New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds, died here today while playing golf. His age was 55.
Mr. Benton, who pitched in the major leagues from 1923 to 1935, had a record of 127 victories and 128 defeats.
After compiling a 42-39 record in a little more than four years with the Braves, Mr. Benton was traded in 1927 to the Giants, with whom he became a star overnight. He won thirteen games and lost only five that year, and his overall 17-7 record topped the National League pitchers in percentage for the season.
The tall speedballer went on to enjoy his best year in 1928, when he led the league by winning twenty-five games and losing nine for the second-place Giants. He slipped to 11-17 in 1929 and, after winning one game and losing three early in 1930, he was traded to the Reds, with whom he won seven and lost twelve. Mr. Benton remained with the Reds until 1935 when he was returned to the Braves. He retired after that season.

Larry Benton came to the Giants with Zach Taylor in a trade that sent Eddie Farrell, Hugh McQuillan and Kent Greenfield to the Braves. When he seemed to have lost much of his effectiveness after three seasons with the Giants, he was traded to the Reds for Hughie Critz, crack second baseman.
At that time, John McGraw, the Giants manager declared, “I hate to see Benton go. But somehow, he couldn't seem to win for us anymore, and I think the change will benefit all the parties concerned.”
When Mr. Benton, a ten-year man, received his unconditional release from the Reds in February, 1936, he was the only native Cincinnatian on the roster.
