Biography
Oswald Bluege was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 24, 1900. Bluege signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1920, and shortly thereafter was sold to the Washington Senators for $3,500. From 1922-1939, he played in the Senators infield, mainly as the thrd baseman. Bluege was one of the top defensive third baseman in the league, with a powerful throwing arm and very quick hands. Bluege played in all three of Washington pennant winners, and is also known as the man whose throw hit teammate Bobo Newsom in the jaw, breaking it,
He retired after 1939 with a career average of .272, and stayed on with the Senators as a coach and eventually a manager. He lead the Senators to second-place finishes in the Junior Circuit in 1943 and 1945, only a game away from the pennant in '45.
Bluege stayed on for the Senators as the chief of the farm system. After signing a young prospect to the first bonus contract in franchise history in 1954 for $10,000, he found himself four years later talking that player into staying on with the club despite the player's slow progress. That player's name was Harmon Killebrew, who went on to hit over 570 home runs in his career.
Bluege stayed on with Senators, who later moved to Minnesota, through the late 60's. He died on October 15, 1985, in his home in Edina, Minnesota, at the age of 84.
