Biography
A former teammate of Joe Sewell and Riggs Stephenson at the Univeristy of Alabama, Ike Boone wound compiling at .370 lifetime average in the minor leagues and also hit .319 in major league stints.
Born in Samantha, Alabama, in 1897, Boone went on to the University of Alalbama, where he was a standout outfielder and hitter. In 1921, he was with New Orleans in the Southern Association, where he hit .389. He came up with the Giants in 1922 and spent most of the 1923 season with San Antonio in the Texas League, where he hit .402, and in 1923 he joined the Boston Red Sox. In Boston in 1924, he hit .337 with 13 home runs and 98 RBI, and hit .330 the next season. However, Boone was an absolutely horrible fielder, and by 1928 he was out of the major leagues and in the Pacific Coast League. In 1929, while playing for San Francisco in the Pacific Coast League, he hit .407 with 55 home runs and 323 hits. He also knocked in 218 runs and scored 195. The following year, the 33-year old was hitting .448 halfway through the season when the Brooklyn Dodgers purchased his contract. He stayed with Brooklyn through 1932.
Boone died in 1958 at the age of 61.
