Biography
PHIL COLLINS DEAD; A FORMER PITCHER
Hurler for Phillies for 6 years Later was with St. Louis Cards, Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (AP) – Phillip (Fidgety Phil) Collins, one-time major league baseball pitcher, died today in the county hospital after a long illness, at the age of 48.
After leaving baseball, Collins operated a tavern. He left his last job, as a guard at the House of Correction, in April because of ill health.
Phil Collins became the star pitcher of the Phillies soon after he began his big league career in 1929. He had been purchased from the New Orleans club of the Southern Association after four seasons in the Three-I league, following a tryout with the Chicago Cubs in 1923.
He played for the Phils for six seasons and was, except in one year, always a winning pitcher for a club which was never better than fourth in the league race. With the fourth place club, he won 14 games and lost 12, but with teams which were able to only seventh he had records of 9-7 in 1929 and 16-11 in 1930.
His effectiveness against the top teams in the circuit attracted the attention of Sam Breadon and Branch Rickey of the Cardinals, and he was purchased by the St. Louis club in May, 1935.
The Cards were then the world champions, and Collins was with them during the season, Frank Frisch using him as a relief pitcher. He had a record of two games won and one lost in more than thirty games in which he appeared. However, the Cards finished second that season, and in 1936 Collins was sold to San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League. He refused to report and the deal was called off. He finished his career in his home city, Chicago, with the Cubs.
