Biography
Spud Davis is rarely mentioned when great catchers are discussed, yet his lifetime performance stands him just outside the Hall of Fame. Offensively, Spud's .308 career average is 3rd all-time among catchers, behind Mickey Cochrane (.320) and Bill Dickey (.313). Davis hit over .300 nine times. His high of .349 in 1933 was second in the National League. From 1929-1935, his first seven full years in the majors, he averaged .327, 8 HRs and 61 RBI. These figures stack up very well against the first 7 seasons of more recognized stars as Cochrane (.326 10 73), Dickey (.316 11 77), Gabby Hartnett (.299 17 68), and Ernie Lombardi (.321 11 66). Davis also compares favorably as a defensive backstop. His lifetime fielding percentage of .984 compares well with Cochrane's .985, Dickey's .988, Hartnett's .984 and Lombardi's .979. Two major factors separate Davis from these other stars, First, he had fewer strong seasons. Second, he played most of his career with second division teams while the others played with high visible champions and contenders.
