Biography
In 1933, we had the first All-Star game in Chicago. Now, we had no idea that it would become what it was today. In fact, the owners were totally against it. 'What? Give them three days off in the middle of the season?' I didn't think I'd play. Lefty Gomez was going to pitch, and I figured since he was a Yankee, Bill Dickey would be catcher. Connie Mack came up to me and said that if they start a left hander, I'm the man. Well, Connie Mack wanted to win in the worst way. The National League had brought John McGraw out of retirement to manage the team, and it's pretty well-known that Mack and McGraw hated each other. Actually, they didn't hate each other. They just had a strong rivalry. Dated back about 30 years. Anyhow, Connie gave us a speech that day at the hotel. He said, 'You all are good players, or else you wouldn't be here. However, some of you aren't going to play today.'
Connie sat in the dugout, and he must have been about 85 or something. I just thought he'd sit there. He wanted me to sit next to him. I thought he wanted me to keep him awake. But he had me sit next to him when we were at bat and talk to me about this pitcher and that pitcher. He held his scorecard and was waving it around and he'd write down what each player did.
Well, I caught all nine innings and we won 4-2. Ruth homered and Gomez pitched, followed by Crowder and Grove. They sold 50,000 tickets and turned away another 20,000. It was a huge success. Nowadays, everybody gets into the game, which is great. They all are there, they all should play.
