Biography
Known as "Jolly Cholly" for most of his baseball career, Grimm was a major league first baseman for 20 years, mainly with the Chicago Cubs, and served three terms as manager of Chicago's North Side Nine.
Grimm signed his first professional contract with the American League Champion Philadelphia Athletics in 1916 when he was just 17 years old. Two years later, Grimm saw minimal action with the St. Louis Cardinals before he was sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates for $3,500. Grimm spent the next five season in Steel City before he was traded with Rabbit Maranville and Wilbur Cooper to the Cubs for George Grantham, Vic Aldridge and Albert Niehaus.
The trade to the Cubs began a long associated with the team until the Wrigley franchise sold the franchise in 1981. Grimm was the Cubs regular first baseman from 1925 through 1933, and was a valuable bat and influence on the bench until he retired after the 1936 season. He finished his playing career with a .290 average and retired with the National League career record for most putouts by a first baseman, most chances accepted and most games at the position. He led or tied for the lead in fielding percentage at first base in nine seasons.
In 1932, Grimm began the first of his three stints as manager of the Cubs. He took over the team in second place, and led the Cubbies to a 37-20 finish, including a 14 game winning streak to take the NL flag.
Charlie led the Cubs to one more NL pennant in 1935, before he resigned in 1938, citing that he had lost control of the players. He took a job as broadcaster until he was lured back into uniform and hired as a coach in 1941. He soon quit his coaching post to take over the reigns of the Milwaukee Brewers, then of the American Association, and led the Brew Crew to a pennant in 1943.
Grimm returned to the north side of Chicago for another term as Cubs manager and led Chicago to its last National League pennant in 1945. He returned to the Brewers in 1951 and again led Milwaukee to the pennant. Grimm parlayed this success to a position as manager of the lowly Boston Braves, and stayed on board until the franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953.
The Wrigley family brought Grimm back as vice-president of the Cubs in 1957, and Charlie took his final fling at managing during the 1960 season. But in early May, he and broadcaster Lou Boudreau traded places. Grimm remained on the Cubs payroll in some capacity for the next twenty years and was very popular on the banquet circuit.
Grimm died on November 15, 1983 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital where he was being treated for Hodgkin's disease. He was 85 years old.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated and his remains were scattered over Wrigley Field.
