Biography
Born in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1905, Frank Grube was a three-sport star at Lafayette, where he was a member of the 1926 national champion football squad. Grube had a long history of competing with Charlie Berry, who beat him out for the cather's job for the White Sox as well as Lafayette. Grube, however, took over for Berry on Lafayette's football team, where he was honorable mention All-American. Also a stand-out in basketball, Grube truly excelled at baseball. He wound playing for two years in the NFL for the New York Yankees, before devoting his time solely to baseball.
Grube played in the major leagues for 7 seasons, compiling a .244 career average. However, he is remembered for joining Lew Fonseca, Milt Gaston and the afore-mentioned Charlie Berry in beating up umpire George Moriarty after Moriarty challenged them to a fight under the stands in Chicgago.
Grube was shot and killed outside his apartment building by a prowler. He was 40 years old.
