Heintzelman debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1937 and had limited success as a starter. From 1937 to 1943, he started 85 games for the Pirates and won just 29. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the military during World War II and returned to the Pirates in 1946. By the end of 1947, he was pitching for the Phillies. His best season came in 1948 when he posted a 17-10 record with a 3.02 ERA in 250 innings. He pitched 15 complete games and led the league with 5 shutouts.
