Biography Rollie Hemsley Is Dead at 65; Catcher Played for Seven Clubs WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 - Rollie Hemsley, a catcher who spent 18 years in the major leagues with seven clubs, died of a heart attack yesterday. He was 65 years old. Mr. Hemsley operated a real estate office in suburban Langley Park, Md. Ralston B. Hemsley entered the big leagues in 1928 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and moved to the Chicago Cubs in 1931 and to the Cincinnati Reds in 1935. He went on to the St. Louis Browns and the Cleveland Indians, returned briefly to the Reds and then joined the New York Yankees in 1942. In 1945 he played in the minors but then came back to the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946 and 1947. His lifetime batting average was .262. His best year was 1934 with the Browns, when he hit .309. When his playing years ended, he managed several teams in the minors.
