Biography
Born on a farm in Kansas in 1903, Elon Hogsett knew early on the rural life wasn't for him. At the age of 14, he took a herd of cattle out to the pasture
on the family farm, and he kept going. He played high school ball in Brownell, Kansas, where he developed a submarine-style of throwing. While a
pro in Independence, he picked up the name "Chief," despite being only "one-thirty-second Cherokee on his mother's side." He signed with Detroit in
1925, and after winning 22 games in Montreal in 1929, he was called up to the Show, but not before becoming an honorary member of the Iroquois tribe.
In Detroit, Hogsett was the premier reliever on the pennant-winning teams of 1934 and 1935. He twice lead the AL in relief wins, and finished second
in saves. He was sent to the St Louis Browns in 1936, where he won 13 games. After a misable 1937 (6-19 6.29) he went to the Washington Senators.
From there, we went to play for the Minneapolis Millers where he won 18 games in 1941 at the age of 37. During World War 2, he found his way
back to the big leagues, pitching in 3 games for Detroit in 1944. After his career was over, he was a liquor salesman and lived out his life Hays, Kansas.
He died in July of 2001 at the age of 98.

"(Lou) Gehrig could cut your legs off, he hit the ball so hard. But what I remember about Gehrig is how he used to murder cigarettes."
- Chief Hogsett, interview with author Richard Bak, June 1982 -
