Biography
Frank O'Donnell “Don” Hurst was born in rural Kentucky in 1905. When he joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1928, Hurst found the Baker Bowl particularly to his liking. He hit .285 in his rookie season, and found himself the Phillies' full-time first baseman. He batted over .300 in the next four seasons for the abysmal Phillies, including a career high .339 in 1932. His 143 runs batted in that season were tops in Senior Circuit, and he finished 5th in batting and 4th in home runs with 24.
Hurst was known as a loner, a quiet and friendly man who has known to be quite selfish. He was consistently accused by teammates as being self serving. One morning at breakfast, Hurst ate too much and claimed he couldn't play. Manager Burt Shotten said if he didn't play, he wouldn't be paid. So, he went out that afternoon and got a couple of hits. Hurst was also known to refuse to pinch hit if he couldn't hit the pitcher.
Hurst slumped to .267 in 1933, and halfway into 1934, he found himself dealt to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for future National League MVP Dolf Camilli. Hurst struggled outside of the Baker Bowl, failing to hit .200 in Chicago. Hurst was released and never played in the major leagues again. In 3275 at bats, he batted .298 with 115 home runs and 610 runs batted in.
Hurst died in 1952, at the young age of 47.
