Biography
Born the son of German immigrants, Willie Kamm came from the shipyards of San Francisco to become a durable and dependable third baseman for the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians.
Kamm was born on February 2, 1900, and at a young age he was making a name for himself around the semi-pro circuit in San Francisco. A skinny kid, at 19 he had only 140 pounds on his 5'10 frame. After having a tonsillectomy, he put on weight and began to hit. After being sold to the Chicago White Sox in 1923, batting .292, he wound up become one of the surest gloves in the Junior Circuit, topping all other contemporaries at the hot corner in fielding percentage from 1924-29. Quick and possessing a good eye, was a fan favorite on the South Side before being traded to the Cleveland Indians for Lew Fonseca in 1930.
He retired in 1935 with a career average of .281, including a high of .308 in 1928. When he retired, his .967 career fielding average was the best for any third baseman in history (he has since fallen to 7th).
Kamm died in 1988 at the age of 88.
