Biography
Walter "Peck" Lerian was a rookie catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1928. At the age of 25, the 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed catcher batted .272 in 96 games. Lerian was very capable defensively. The club's intention was for this Baltimore native to be the long-term catcher. In 1929, he was the Phillies' starting catcher. Despite hitting .223, Lerian hit seven home runs and lead the National League in fielding for catchers. However, in the off-season, tragedy struck as Lerian was walking down a street in his hometown a runaway car jumped the curb and pinned Lerian to a store front, killing him. He was only 26.
