Biography

While his invention might be debated, he was one of the first pitchers to rely heavily on the slider. In nine seasons in the majors, he finished with a 60-59 record. His best season came in 1942 when, between St. Louis and New York, he pitched to a 14-5 record with a 2.48 ERA. The Giants traded Lohrman, along with Johnny McCathy, Ken O'Dea and $50,000 to the Cardinals for Johnny Mize. In May 1942, the Giants purchased his contract back from the Cardinals. He was traded again in July 1943 when the Giants sent him, along with Joe Orengo and Bill Sayles, to the Dodgers for Johnny Allen and Dolph Camilli.
