Biography
The diminuitive Walter "Rabbit" Maranville was one of the most popular players in the early part of the century, and his fame, joviality, and self-promotion lead this shortstop into the Hall of Fame.
Maranville was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. He came up with the Boston Braves in 1912, at the age of 20, and became the regular shortstop the next year. For the next five years, he lead the National League in putouts, and was the most spectacular shortstop in the game, defensively, and in 1914, he was key in leading the Braves out of last place in late July to the National League pennant and a World Championship, hitting .308 in the Braves sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics. He missed most of the 1918 season while serving his country in the Great War.
The vastness off Braves Field did not aid Maranville's hitting, for his high mark was only .267 in 1919. But Maranville was dealt to Pittsburgh in 1921, and hit .294 and .295 in his first two season with the Pirates. However his drinking became a problem that the Pirates were tired of dealing with. After 4 seasons with Pittsburgh, he journeyed around to the Cubs (where he managed the Cubs for 53 games and into last place), Dodgers and Cardinals before his career was ressurected. He played along side Frankie Frisch in '28, at hit .308 in the World Series for the Cardinals. Clean and sober, Maranville rejoined the Braves at age 36, He gradually made the move to second base, and played very well until a broken leg in spring training of 1934 kept him out for the season. He came back for 23 games in 1935, and then drifted off to the minor leagues, where he played until he was 47.
He collected over 2600 hits in his career, but his average was merely .258. But he was a star for his fielding and his antics. After a few drinks, he would eat live goldfish, or walk on building ledges far above the street, He was very popular with the ladies, and had many friends because off-the-field, good times followed Rabbit. Maranville and teammate/friend Charlie Grimm used to team up and sing, with Grimm on his banjo. Unfortunately, for those within earshot, Maranville's voice was not all that impressive.
Maranville died in January of 1954, at the age of 62, and was elected to the Hall of Fame shortly thereafter.
