Biography
Henry “Heinie” Meine's journey to the major leagues was rocky, and filled with disappointment, career changes, and moderate success.
Meine, called “The Count of Luxemborg” because of his family ancestry, was born in St Louis in 1896. He was a promising young pitcher, until the spitball was banned in 1920. Left without his most effective pitch, he spent time as a very good junk-ball pitcher in the minor leagues through 1927, save a brief appearance with the St Louis Browns in 1922. Meine, at 31, decided to retire to operate a St Louis tavern.
After needling from his friends, Meine came out of retirement and joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1929. At 33, he won 7 games in his rookie season, appearing in 22 games. In 1931, he was tied for the National League lead in victories with 19 and innings pitched with 284, compiling a 2.98 ERA. He follows that with 12 and 15 win seasons, and in 1934 he was 7-6 before retiring for good.
Meine's bar, located in his house, actually served as a hang-out for many visiting teams in East St Louis, as liquor flowed easily in the Meine house during prohibition. Players continued to visit long after Meine retired.
Meine died in 1968 in St Louis at the age of 72.
