Biography
Well, what can be said about the Babe that hasn't been said? Easily the most popular athlete in American history, Babe Ruth is a legend, a myth, and an American icon. And he was real.
George Herman Ruth came from an orphanage in Maryland to the Boston Red Sox as a left-handed pitcher, and a very talented one. He debuted in July of 1914, and in his first four full seasons, he won 78 games. At one time he held the record most consecutive shutout innings in a World Series. Before long though, it was obvious that he was so much more a hitter than a pitcher. He led the American league in home runs in 1918, with 11 in only 317 AB. In 1919 he hit an unheard of total of 29. Then came the controversy.
Harry Frazhee sold Ruth to the Yankees in the off season. Red Sox fans were incensed, but Frazhee was clearing house. The Red Sox had been World Champions in 1912, '15, '16 and '18. But Frazhee ran into financial trouble and had to unload all his talent to stay above water. The Babe was just one of many.
With the Yankees in 1920, he hit an incredible total of 54 home runs. The next closest was George Sisler with 19! From there, the legend was born. Babe Ruth's immense popularity was responsible for the resurgence of the national pastime, since the 1919 Black Sox Scandal had done such damage to the games reputation. He followed up the '20 season with 59 home runs, an unbeatable record, to say the least. He scored 177 runs and knocked in 171. The game was changing. The dead ball era was over.
The Yankee teams of the 20's were powerhouses, with Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs and others. With strong pitching, the Yankees were truly a dynasty, and Ruth was the game's biggest star. In 1925, troubled by illness (strongly rumored to be syphilis), he slumped to .290 with 25 home runs. His lifestyle was reckless. He was a drunk, and a womanizer, but after that season he found his way to balance with the game. He continued his bad habits, and he came back in 1926 to bat .372 with 48 home runs.
In 1927, he headed Murderer's Row, probably the greatest team ever fielded, with a record 60 home runs that stood for 34 years. Despite his off-field habits getting progressively out of control and his weight continuing to balloon, he was still a danger at the plate, and the jewel in the eye of every American boy. He always took time for children, playing in the street with them or signing an autograph.
In 1931, he led the American League in home runs for the 12th year out of 14. In 1932, in the World Series, he hit his famous "Called Shot" off of Charlie Root of the Chicago Cubs. Controversy continues to this day as to whether or not Babe had pointed to where he was going to hit Root's next pitch. Cubs say he did not, Yankees say he did.
In 1935, he joined the Boston Braves for his last hurrah. Much to the chagrin of his teammates, who resented the fact that Ruth, 40, was there only for a tourist attraction. He did not partake in team events, stayed at different hotels on the road, and distanced himself from the rest of the team, which was mired in last place. Babe Ruth's last three home runs, number 712, 713 and 714, were hit on the same day, marking the first time Ruth had ever connected for three in a regular season game. A couple of weeks later, after Silas Johnson had struck out the Babe three times, Ruth retired. His totals: 714 home runs, 2213 runs knocked in, a .342 average and .690 slugging percentage.
The Babe never got a managing job although he always wanted one. In fact, he was to be offered the Tigers managing job, but decided he would rather go fishing on the day he was to meet with Tigers owner Frank Navin.
Babe Ruth died of throat cancer in 1948. He was only 53 years old. His funeral was one of the largest ever seen in New York, as people lined up for hours to pay their final respects. It was a service fit for a king, and that is quite fitting.
