Biography

Urban Shocker began his career playing semi-pro baseball in Michigan and Ontario, before signing with Ottawa. In 1915, his contract was purchased by the New York Yankees for $750. He was dealt to the St Louis Browns after the 1917 season, and became a very effective pitcher, especially against his former squad in New York. He won 20 games four straight seasons, including 27 in 1921. He was one of the most effective spitball pitchers in the game's history. In 1925, he signed with the Yankees after being declared a free agent by Commissioner Landis. Despite a 18-6 record for the legendary 1927 Yankees, Shocker retired from baseball following the 1927 season, but returned to the Yanks in May of 1928 for one game on May 30, 1928. He finished his 13 year career with a 187-117 record (.615) and 28 shutouts. Suffering from mitral valve failure, Shocker spent the last few years of his life unable to sleep lying down. He headed out west for health reasons, and played in a semi-pro game in Denver but pitched very poorly. Weakened from his ailment, and contracted pneumonia shortly thereafter and finally died on September 9, 1928, at the age of 38.
