Biography
Mr. Taylor spent 58 years in professional baseball, including 16 years as a major league catcher for Brooklyn, the Boston Braves, New York Giants, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.

It was while Mr. Taylor was manager of the Browns that Mr. Veeck signed the late Eddie Gaedel, a midget, and ordered him inserted into a game against Detroit as a pinch hitter. Mr. Gaedel drew a walk and was promptly barred from the majors.

Mr. Taylor also managed Pete Gray, a one-armed outfielder, for Mr. Veeck. The Browns were once assigned a psychiatrist who said he could make the team a pennant contender through hypnotism.

Taylor complied a lifetime batting average of .261 in 914 major league games. He managed the Browns in 1946 and again from 1948 to 1951. He was a major league scout from 1954 through 1972.
