Biography

JOE VOSMIK DIES: BASEBALL PLAYER

Ex-Cleveland Outfielder – Managed in Minor Leagues
CLEVELAND, Jan. 27 (AP) – Joe Vosmik, former major league outfielder and minor league manager, died today in University Hospital. He was 51 years old and lived in near-by Kirtland.
Mr. Vosmik who had undergone surgery for cancer Jan. 18, played for the Cleveland Indians from 1930 through 1936 and with the St. Louis Browns next year. He then spent two years with the Boston Red Sox, two with the Brooklyn Dodgers and finished his major league playing career with Washington in 1944. He managed at Oklahoma City, Tuscon, Ariz. and Dayton, Ohio.
Vosmik batted more than .300 six times. His peak years were in 1934 and 1935 when he batted .341 and .348 respectively. His lifetime batting average was .307. He was a product of the Cleveland sandlots and started his professional career in 1929 at Frederick, Md. He was called up by Cleveland in the closing days of the 1930 season.
Vosmik's best year was 1935, when he led the American League in hits with 219 and had the most doubles, 47, and triples, 20. But on the last day of that season Buddy Myer of Washington beat him out for the batting championship by a fraction of a percentage point with .349. In recent years Mr. Vosmik worked as an appliance salesman.
He is survived by his widow, Sally Vosmik; two sons, Robert and Larry, and a daughter, Karen.
