In 1938, he won 23 games for Milwaukee of the American Association and earned a shot at the majors again with the Dodgers. From there, his career took off. In 1941, he led the league with seven shutout and pitched 23 complete games. He also started the All-Star game that season for the National League and he finished third in MVP voting. In the 1941 World Series, he was the only Dodgers pitcher to win a game against the Yankees. From 1940 to 1943, he was 70-36 for Brooklyn.
