HARLEM, NY(AP): The Knights banged out 16 hits and had two 4-run innings as Harlem downed the North Dallas Forty to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Greenberg had his second 4-hit game of the Series, and Roy Johnson banged out 3 more to lead the way for the Knights.
North Dallas struck in the first, with Babe Ruth knocking in Rick Ferrell with a double to right. Harlem starter Fitzsimmons was not sharp, but managed to extricate himself from the first with only the one run, and the second inning with no damage. But the Forty got at him again in the third, when Ruth yet again came came through with two outs, this time drilling a single just past Joe Cronin's glove. After Bill Terry walked, Fred Lindstrom doubled down the left-field line to drive in Ruth, giving North Dallas a 2-0 lead. However, that lead would be short-lived.
Pinky Higgins greeted Ed Wells in the third with a triple into the right-center gap. He scored when Cronin grounded out to second base. After a double by Hank Greenberg and a walk to Klein, Bill Dickey singled to center to score Greenberg to knot the score at 2. Roy Johnson singled to left to score Klein and give the Knights the lead. Myer singled to knock in Dickey, but Johnson was thrown out at third. This was enough for Terry to remove Wells from the game, and Ben Cantwell got out of the inning with Harlem up, 4-2.
North Dallas cut into the defecit in the 5th, when once again, Ruth got things started. Ruth doubled to right, and Terry walked. Lindstrom laid down a perfect bunt to advance the runners. A weak ground-out to shortstop by Appling allowed Ruth to score, making the score 4-3.
The Knights added one more in the bottom of the 5th frame on an RBI double by Myer, but North Dallas got it back in the 8th when a pinch-hit single by babe Phelps scored Billy Werber who had doubled 3 pitches prior.
Leading 5-4 in the 8th, Harlem needed some insurance runs. Tom Zachary lead off with a single, but had to leave the game for a pinch runner, Dolph Camilli. Pinky Higgins doubled off the wall in right, scoring Camilli from first. Cronin followed with a double of his own, scoring Higgins. Waite Hoyt was replaced with Bill Swift, who was no more effective. Greenberg tripled for his 4th hit of the day, just a round-tripper away from the cycle, and Chuck Klein flied out to right, allowing Greenberg to score. This gave the Knights enough insurance to hold on for the 9-4 victory.
