NORTH DALLAS - Fremont committed 4 errors, including two by catcher Babe Phelps, that lead to 4 unearned runs as the North Dallas 40 defeated the
Furtraders, 7-2, in Game 1 of the 1935 World Series.
Hal Schumacher, who was 19-5 in the regular season, retired the first two Furtraders he faced before Wally Berger hit a solo
home run to left, giving Fremont a 1-0 lead. The lead, however, was short lived. In the bottom of the first, Paul Derringer
(11-14) appeared to be in control, striking out Galan and Gehringer on 7 pitches total. But then Travis Jackson booted a Mel
Ott grounder, and Lombardi knocked him in with a double into the right-field corner to tie the game. Hank Leiber singled into
center and the pokey Lombardi scored from second, not due to his base-running prowess but due to Phelps dropping the throw from
Averill. Zeke Bonura singled, and Luke Appling knocked in both Leiber and Bonura with a double, giving North Dallas a 4-1
lead after one inning.
Schumacher escaped the second as Fremont left two runners on base, and in the bottom of the second, Gehringer followed Galan's
double with an RBI single, giving the 40 a 5-1 lead after two.
Schumacher settled down, allowing only one base runner over the
next three innings. Derringer had uneventful third and fourth innings. But in the fifth inning, Ott lead off with a single.
After Lombardi lined out, Ott advanced to third after trying to steal second when Phelps' throw bounded past second baseman
Tony Cuccinello. Leiber singled to knock in Ott, and that was all for Paul Derringer.
Jack Knott (7-3 on the year) came in and gave up singles to Zeke Bonura and Luke Appling, with the second scoring Leiber
to get North Dallas' lead up to 7-1. Fremont got back one in the top of the 6th when George Watkins, fresh off a leg injury,
hit a two-out home run to cut the 40 lead to 5.
Schumacher continued to get in and out of jams, and with two outs in the ninth, and the bases loaded,
Chief Hogsett was called on to end the game, which he did when player/manager Bill Terry grounded out to end the game, 7-2.
