ONE ACE HURT, ANOTHER CHASED AS FREMONT EVENS SERIES, 6-5
NORTH DALLAS - Red Ruffing was hit hard, and Johnny Marcum was hurt, as Fremont scrapped their way to a 6-5 victory of North Dallas, overcoming 5 errors and
leveling the Series at one game a-piece.
Fremont couldn’t wait to get at North Dallas’ ace hurler, as Earl Averill only need one pitch to give Fremont an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Augie Galan singled, and reached third when he stole second and advanced on a throwing error by Babe Phelps, Phelps third error in two games.
Galan scored when Charlie Gehriner singled off Marcum, tying the score at 1. In the top of the second, Marcum himself singled home Phelps with one out, and Charlie
Gehringer failed to turn a double play and allowed another run to score, giving Fremont a 3-1 lead.
However, things got sticky in the bottom of the second when Zeke
Bonura’s bunt attempt was bobbled by Marcum, but not before Marcum slipped on the grass and hurt his wrist, forcing him to leave the game for Jack Knott. Knott
gave up a single to Rick Ferrell, and another single to Bill Werber, but Bonura was thrown out at the plate. Ruffing laid down a nice sacrifice next, pushing Ferrell and
Werber to second and third, before Cuccinello misplayed a routine grounder allowing one run to score. Gehringer flied out ending the inning with Fremont leading, 3-2.
Fremont added two more in the top of the third, and North Dallas got one back in the bottom of the third on Mel Ott’s home run, leaving Fremont ahead 5-3. Wally
Berger finished off Red Ruffing in the 4th with a two-out home run, his second of the series and giving Fremont a 6-3 lead. Rube Walberg relieved Knott in the 6th
with a 6-4 lead, and faced two batters before spraining his ankle. Walberg is expected to miss the next four days.
North Dallas got within one in the 7th when George
Watkins misplayed a single, allowing Bill DeLancey to score. Jimmie Deshong managed to hang on in the 8th and 9th as Fremont wound up winners, 6-5, Deshong
getting the win in relief.
Game three will be Monday night in Fremont, with Bill Swift (15-6) going for North Dallas against Fremont’s Jim Weaver. (12-10).
Marcum is expected to be back and ready by his next start.
