NORTH DALLAS - Billy Rogell had three hits and 4 RBI, and Red Ruffing
threw 5 no-hit innings as Pawtucket ransacked the
Forty, 8-3.
The Dutchmen, making their first post-season
appearence since 1929, struck first en route to an 8-0
lead after 8.5 innings. North Dallas is looking for
their 4th straight DBS chanmpionship.
Sloppy play lead to Pawtucket's first run in the
first, when Luke Appling threw a ball into the dirt
allowing Billy Herman to reach third, where he later
scored on Beau Bell's ground out. They increased the
lead to 3-0 when Rogell hit a two-run home run in the
second inning off of starter Claude Passeau (0-1).
Red Ruffing (1-0), who was sent to Pawtucket from
North Dallas in an August trade, was absolutely
masterful, only allowing a walk to, of all people,
Passeau.
In the top of the sixth, Hal Trosky doubled off the
wall in deep left-center, and Rogell knocked him in to
give the Dutchmen a 4-0 lead. Then, the Texas autumn
shy opened up, delaying the game between innings for
over 70 minutes. Ruffing, despite not allowing a hit,
was removed for Bump Hadley. The game was again
delayed for about an hour an innings later when the
rains came back.
In the top of the 8th, Joe Medwick greeted Ken Chase
with a 380 foot home run after fouling off 6 pitches,
giving Pawtucket a 5-0 lead. Pawtucket added another 3
runs, giving them a very comfortable 8-run lead.
North Dallas tried to make it interesting in the
bottom of the ninth, when Mel Ott had a no-out two-run
homer. North Dallas managed to push another run across
the plate, but that was all for the Forty.
Game two will be in North Dallas on Tuesday afternoon.
